If your Ford Transit cuts out or shuts down under certain conditions, the cause isn’t always what it first appears. Modern vans rely heavily on sensors and ECU safety strategies, so one faulty reading can create misleading symptoms.

This was the case for a Ford Transit we diagnosed in Norfolk.

The Problem

The customer reported:

  • Van drove normally

  • As soon as the coolant fan engaged, the engine shut off

  • Fault was repeatable but inconsistent

Issues like this often lead to expensive guesswork if not diagnosed properly.

The Diagnostic Process

We carried out:

✔ Full system scan

✔ Live data monitoring

✔ Testing under real conditions

Instead of assuming a cooling-system issue, we reviewed engine and emissions data across the board.

The Cause — Faulty EGT Sensor

The fault was traced to a failing Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor.

This sensor feeds temperature data to the ECU for DPF, turbo and engine protection. When it sends incorrect high readings, the ECU can trigger protective strategies — including shutting the engine down.

When the cooling fan came on, system conditions changed slightly, which triggered the ECU’s response to the false EGT signal.

The Result

✔ Correct fault identified

✔ No unnecessary parts replaced

✔ Customer advised on the proper repair

A simple sensor fault can look like a major problem without proper diagnostics.

If your vehicle has warning lights, cut-outs or emissions issues, professional testing makes all the difference.
